GDC Thannamandi celebrates Earth Day

THANNAMANDI, Apr 22: The Department of Botany in collaboration with Department of Geography and Institution's Innovation Council (IIC) under the aegis of IQAC of GDC Thannamandi celebrated Earth Day as part of Viksit Bharat@47 Sankalp here today.
On this occasion a brief but impressive program on this year's Earth Day Theme "Planet vs Plastic" organized under the patronage of Prof. (Dr.) Farooq Ahmed, Principal of the college in which Prof. Saleem Ayaz Rather, Head Department of Zoology, Govt. PG College Rajouri was special guest. The program was followed by an Earth Day pledge and cleanliness drive on campus. of. Farooq Ahmed emphasized upon the need of collective and comprehensive efforts from all stakeholders to fight menace of plastic which is harmful for the health of human beings as well as the planet at large. He said that planting more trees, applying three Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle), Clean-up campaigns and greater awareness are some of ways we can opt towards a healthier and more resilient planet worth living for everyone everywhere. He expressed hopes that students and youth may take a lead to spread awareness in their locality and would serve as agents of change towards promoting sustainability. He appreciated the organizing team for taking this initiative.
Dr. Ashaq Malik, IQAC Coordinator and Head, Department of Botany welcomed and introduced the audience about the Earth day which is celebrated across the globe since 1970. The ambitious goal to reduce use of Plastic to 60 percent by 2040 and phasing out single use plastic by 2030 can only be fulfilled by glocal initiatives and innovative actions.
Adnan Aqib, student of B.Sc 6th Semester read out the earth day pledge. Dr. Gulshan Rashid Bhat, Head Department of Geography and Anuj Bali, Librarian and Vice President, IIC in College coordinated the cleanliness drive. Prof. Asif Aijaz Lone, Head Department of Physics and NSS Coordinator presented the formal vote of thanks. Prominent among others present on the occasion were Dr. Nazakat Hussain, Dr. Abdul Haq Naimi, Dr. Nazar Ul Islam, Prof. Altaf Hussain, Dr. Junaid Ahmed, Dr. Shiraz Ahmed, Prof. Fatima Parveen, Dr. Ather Aziz Raina, Prof Rumy Dar, Prof. Rizwana, Dr. Nagina, Dr. Sarfaraz Mirza, and Dr. Arshad Khan.
