Early Times Report
POONCH, May 16: The Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), Field Office Poonch, under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India (J&K, Ladakh), held a significant awareness programme at Government Degree College (GDC) Poonch. This initiative, part of the Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) campaign, aimed to educate citizens about the importance of participating in the ongoing Lok Sabha Elections 2024.
The event specifically targeted young voters, emphasizing their role in the electoral process. Dr. Jasbir Singh, Principal of GDC Poonch, inaugurated the event, which saw the attendance of notable figures such as Dr. Mohd Akram, SVEEP Coordinator GDC Poonch; Ravinder Singh, District SVEEP Coordinator Poonch; Dr. Nusrat Kouser, Head of the Political Science Department; Dr. Yogesh Sharma, Head of the Philosophy Department; and various faculty members, teachers, and students from local schools including GGHSS, GBHSS, Christ School, and Jamia Zia Ul Uloom School.
Attendees were provided with comprehensive literature detailing the polling process, voter registration, use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), and special facilities for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) and senior citizens. Dr. Jasbir Singh encouraged first-time voters to actively participate in the electoral process and urged them to promote voting day participation, scheduled for May 25, 2024.
Speeches by Dr. Nusrat Kouser and Dr. Yogesh Sharma highlighted the importance of exercising one's right to vote and motivating others to do the same. Dr. Mohd Akram discussed district administration initiatives to ensure free and fair elections in Poonch. Informative sessions covered various electoral topics, stressing the importance of ethical voting.
Participants responded positively to the programme, appreciating CBC Poonch's efforts in raising electoral awareness. Vijay Mattoo, In-charge of CBC Poonch, enlightened students on the workings of the Central Bureau of Communication and urged first-time voters to engage actively in the democratic process.
The event also featured the administration of the 'Voters' Pledge' by the Principal of GDC Poonch, involving staff, locals, and students. Earlier, a drawing competition and an open quiz on the theme 'SVEEP' were held, with about 60 students from different institutions in Poonch participating. A cultural programme by M/s Saraswati Sangeet Vidhayalay added vibrant colors to the event.
The awareness programme successfully engaged the community, reinforcing the importance of electoral participation and the role of young voters in strengthening democratic principles.
