Early Times Report

Jammu, May 27: Two days after hinting at conducting assembly elections in J&K very soon, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar on Monday announced imminent assembly polls in the Union Territory to bolster the democratic process.
In an official handout issued by the Election Commission of India on Monday, the CEC made it clear that the active participation of the people of J&K in Lok Sabha elections is a huge positive for upcoming assembly elections in the UT of J&K.
He further said that the people of J&K embrace democracy and assert their stake in governance.
The CEC announced that an increasing number of young people in the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir have shown their faith in democracy by actively participating in the electoral process.
He highlighted that the majority of electors in the UT fall within the 18-59 age group. “The high voter turnout in the 2024 general elections reflects their strong belief in democracy, which is a positive and heartening development,” he said.
Jammu and Kashmir recently achieved its highest voter turnout in 35 years, with a combined voter turnout of 58.46% for its five Lok Sabha seats during the 2024 General Elections. This significant participation demonstrates the robust democratic spirit and civic engagement among the region’s residents.

fficials for ensuring peaceful elections in the UT. Rajiv Kumar commended the voters of J&K, stating, “This achievement is supported by a 25% increase in the number of contesting candidates since 2019, enhanced citizen involvement through C-vigil complaints, and 2,455 requests for rallies via the Suvidha Portal, indicating a shift towards fuller electoral participation.”
He noted that this active engagement bodes well for the upcoming Assembly elections, emphasizing that such participation will further strengthen democracy in Jammu and Kashmir. Kumar likened this electoral mobilization to the intricate and renowned Kashmiri artisanal weave, highlighting the depth of involvement and participation.
The CEC also acknowledged the efforts of election and security officials in achieving this historic turnout. “The historic participation in the UT was realized through the earnest efforts of officials who worked tirelessly to empower the people of Jammu and Kashmir, especially the youth, to participate in the elections,” he said.
To accommodate Kashmiri migrant voters, special polling stations were set up at various relief camps in Delhi, Jammu, and Udhampur. Voters had the option of voting in person at these designated stations or using postal ballots. In total, 21 special polling stations were established in Jammu, one in Udhampur, and four in Delhi.
Additionally, Ladakh, constituted as a separate Union Territory in 2019, also saw enthusiastic voter participation with a voter turnout rate of 71.82%.
