| Police registers case on alleged blasphemous social media post by non-local student | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 6: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Thursday took cognizance of the alleged blasphemous post by a non-local student of Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar and registered a criminal case in Karan Nagar police station.
The police action comes on a day when GMC Srinagar suspended classes for undergraduate courses for three days amid tensions over an alleged blasphemous post.
The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar also suspended classwork for today.
A controversy erupted on Wednesday after a non-local undergraduate medical student posted an alleged blasphemous post on social media, triggering protests in the GMC campus.
“It is hereby ordered that undergraduate classes shall remain suspended from 6th to 8th June 2024,” an order issued on Thursday by the Registrar Academics GMC, Srinagar read.
The College administration has already suspended the student with immediate effect. “..It is to inform that immediate cognisance of the matter was taken by GMC Srinagar administration. Pending enquiry the concerned individual has been suspended with immediate effect,” GMC spokesman said yesterday.
Apparently fearing that the protests may spread to other campuses, the NIT Srinagar also suspended the class work on Thursday. The NIT said that no undergraduate, postgraduate or PhD student residing outside would be allowed to enter the campus.
“The classwork in the Institute shall remain suspended on 06.06.2024 (Thursday). No UG/PG/PhD student, residing outside, will be allowed to enter the campus,” a notice issued by Dean Academic Affairs, Prof. Mohammad Shafi Mir read.
Meanwhile, Srinagar Police has taken cognizance of the incident of posting of sensitive content against religious sentiments of a particular community by one student of GMC Srinagar.
“Upon receipt of communication from GMC Srinagar Administration, a criminal case, FIR No. 13/24 u/s 153,153A, 295A, 505 (2) IPC has been registered in PS (police station) Karan Nagar on June 6, 2024,” a police statement said.
The police also appealed to the common public to desist from spreading rumours/false information.
“They shouldn’t fall prey to false propaganda of anti-social elements. Legal action shall be taken against those who are found to be involved in provocative act/instigation,” the statement said. |
