GDC Ramban organizes an Educational visit of students to BHEP Chandarkot

Ramban, June 10: Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) of the college in collaboration with Eco-Club and NSS Unit of the College organized a one day tour to Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project in Chanderkot, Ramban. Around thirty students made visits to the various BHEP locations. The tour was coordinated by Prof. Sanjay Kumar Kattal HOD Physics, Prof. Jawaid Sarver IIC Convener, Prof. Ajay Kumar Convener Eco-club and Dr Sanjay Kumar NSS Program officer of the college.
Earlier, Prof. Archana Kaul worthy Principal of the College and Prof. Satish Kumar HOD Zoology along with other senior faculty members flagged off the students and accompanying staff from the college campus at 9:30am in the morning.
The students first visited the Baglihar Dam where Mr. Dewarka Nath Sharm, Mechanical Technician-II interacted with the students in Dam control room and he gave them a detailed explanation of how the Automatic Reservoir Monitoring and Control System operated. He further emphasized that the project consists of a gravity concrete dam measuring 143 metres in height and 363 metres in length, which has total volume of 1.9 million m³, creating a reservoir with a capacity of 475 million m³.
The students also visited the underground Hydroelectric Power project. Mr Munish Manchanda Assistant Engineer, Operational Control Room BHEP-1 as a resource person interacted with the students and delivered a compelling presentation on the operation of a hydroelectric power plant and the process of producing electricity from the project. He further added that Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project is a run-of-the-river power project on the Chenab River and this is the first power project executed by the Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Corporation.
The underground powerhouse is comprised of two stages i.e. stage-1 and stage-2 with each maximum capacity of generating electricity of 450 MW. This power house is 221 m long, 24 m wide and 51 m high. Six Francis turbines installed each with a capacity of 150 MW, produce a total capacity of 900 MW, utilizing a gross head of 130 m.
The trip came to an end with a vote of gratitude from Prof. Jawaid Sarver, Convener IIC of the college, to the PDD for granting permission, setting up of resource person at the sites and giving college students a chance to experience such amazing scientific innovation. It will undoubtedly aid in fostering a scientific temperament among the visiting students of our college.
