KVK, imparts training on organic turmeric, ginger production

REASI, Aug 17: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the aegis of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) organised the farmers training programme on "Entrepreneurship development in organic turmeric and ginger production" here at Talwara village in Reasi distt. of J&K which was actively attended by a number of farmers of the village.The programme was organised under the dynamic stewardship of Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, Prof.B.N. Tripathi and able guidance of Director Extension (DE), Prof. Amrish Vaid of SKUAST-J. Chief Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, Dr. Banarsi Lal warmly welcomed the participants and said that Reasi distt. has an immense potential in the cultivation of organic turmeric and ginger. He further said that some areas of the distt. are heavily infested with the monkeys menace as monkeys damage the main crops and thus directly affect the farmers income. He narrated that both turmeric and ginger are viable alternative crops in monkeys' prone areas as both crops are not damaged by the monkeys. He guided the farmers on the commercial cultivation of organic turmeric and ginger and said that they can fetch more returns by growing them organically.He guided the farmers on the preparation of organic formulations such as beejamrit, jeevamrit, Panchgavya, fermented butter milk etc. and elaborated their usages to produce the organic turmeric and ginger.He also suggested the farmers to use Ghanjeevamrit, Neemastra, organic fungicides, manures etc. to produce the organic turmeric and ginger. He informed that organic and natural farming is helpful in the production of safe and quality spices by reducing the cost of cultivation. He guided farmers on the organic management of diseases, insect-pests and nutrients in both turmeric and ginger. He informed that organic turmeric and ginger are helpful to improve the health status of human beings by improving the immunity in the body. He added that value addition in turmeric and ginger can open some new avenues of income and employment in rural areas.Later the organic fields of turmeric and ginger were demonstrated to the farmers. By observing the organic ginger and turmeric fields, many new farmers showed keen interest towards the cultivation of these crops.During the programme, progressive woman farmer Neelam Devi was also present who shared here experiences on organic turmeric and ginger with other participants.The programme was assisted by Manohar Lal and concluded by Dr. Banarsi Lal with formal vote of thanks.
