Three-day course on Human Rights, Criminal Justice system kicks off at SKPA

UDHAMPUR, Aug 20: A significant three-day training course on "Human Rights and the Criminal Justice System" commenced today at the Sher-I-Kashmir Police Academy (SKPA) in Udhampur. The event saw the participation of fifteen officers from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, marking a crucial step toward integrating human rights principles within law enforcement practices. The inaugural session was led by Shri Rajinder Kumar Gupta, IPS, SSP, and Deputy Director (Indoor Training). In his address, Shri Gupta emphasized the vital role that human rights play in policing. He stressed that law enforcement officers must not only enforce the law but also act as guardians of human dignity and rights.
"This course is vital in fostering a well-informed, ethical, and accountable police force that recognizes the intrinsic value of human rights in the criminal justice process," Shri Gupta stated. The training program is designed to educate police officers on balancing security and justice while protecting citizens' rights. Key topics covered include: The relationship between human rights and fundamental rights. The structure and components of the criminal justice system, including the roles of police, judiciary, prisons, and legal aid. The historical development of human rights in India. Key human rights issues in India and the role of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and State Human Rights Commissions (SHRCs). The importance of police and media coordination in preventing human rights violations. The rights of women and children under the criminal justice system, focusing on domestic violence, workplace harassment, and the Juvenile Justice Act. The role of the criminal justice system in promoting and protecting human rights. Challenges in the criminal justice system concerning human rights, including issues like custodial violence, torture, extrajudicial killings, and arbitrary arrests. The course is being coordinated by Shri Sandeep Mahajan, Inspector, with assistance from SI Irshad Ahmad, a faculty member at SKPA. Guest speakers from the police force and academic institutions will share their expertise throughout the program.
