Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 10: On late Monday evening, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary organization K C Venugopal released a list of Congress candidates for the third and final phase of the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir but the name of former Deputy Chief Minister mysteriously missing in the list.
Tara Chand, ex-Deputy Chief Minister and former Speaker of the Legislative Assembly is adamant about contesting elections on the Chhamb Assembly segment which is now opened from the general category.
The Congress party, on the other hand, has asked Tara Chand to contest the election from the Akhnoor (reserved) Assembly segment.
Keeping in view the dispute, the Congress high command has not yet made a decision on the Akhnoor and Chhamb Assembly segment.
Tara Chand is seeking a mandate on the Chhamb Assembly segment but his candidature is opposed by youth leader Satish Sharma.
Tara Chand represented the Chhamb Assembly segment in 1996, 2002, and 2008 but now this segment has been opened for the general category.
Sources said that the party wanted him to shift to the neighbouring Akhnoor Assembly segment reserved for the Scheduled Caste but the former Deputy Chief Minister is adamant about the Chhamb seat.
Once a loyalist of Ghulam Nabi Azad, Tara Chand resigned from the Congress and joined Azad’s Democratic Progressive Azad Party in September 2022.
Within three months after joining the party, Tara Chand dumped his political mentor Ghulam Nabi Azad, and returned to the Congress party.
As reported earlier, Satish Sharma, son of two-time Lok Sabha member from Jammu seat late Madan Lal Sharma, has exhibited his strength by organizing an impressive show on Friday.

h Sharma has given a clear message to the Congress leadership that ignoring him for the Chhamb assembly segment would be disastrous for the party in two Assembly seats of Akhnoor sub-division. The Congress party on Monday evening released the names of 18 candidates for the third phase of Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The majority of these candidates are from Jammu province, where the Congress has a direct fight with the BJP.
The Congress party has announced candidates for 15 seats in four districts of Jammu province - Jammu, Samba, Kathua, and Udhampur - where polling will be held on October 1. Notably, six former ministers have been given mandates to contest the Assembly elections.
Acting president of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) chief Raman Bhalla will contest the election from the newly carved RS Pura-Jammu South Assembly constituency. He will face off against BJP’s national secretary Dr. Narindra Singh Raina, a professor at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Science and Technology (SKUAST) Jammu.
Two-time Lok Sabha member and former minister Choudhary Lal Singh has been given the party mandate for the Basholi Assembly segment. He will fight against BJP’s Darshan Choudhary. Singh has previously represented the Basholi Assembly segment in 1996, 2002, and 2014 as a candidate of Congress, Congress (Tiwari), and BJP, respectively. He won the seat as a BJP candidate in the 2014 Assembly elections.
Other notable candidates include Mula Ram, Dr. Manohar Lal, Yogesh Sawhney, and Yash Kundal, all of whom are former ministers. The Congress party’s candidate list for the third phase of Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir is seen as a strong challenge to the ruling BJP in the region.
