10/4/2024 9:48:59 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 4: At an impressive function held in the School for Hearing Handicapped, Shahidi Chowk here, the J&K Samaj Kalyan Kendra, Jammu, ( SKK) a well- known NGO, proudly installed a statue of its founder and a great social crusader, late Dr. Ram Rattan Khajuria; some described his as Jammu’s Vinobha Bhave, on his 92nd birth anniversary today. The SKK runs a School for hearing and speech impaired children to provide them free education from 1st to 12 class.
The State Election Commissioner and former Chief Secretary Sh. B.R.
Sharma unveiled the statue. The former CVC & DGP Kuldeep Khoda and former DGP, Dr Ashok Bhan were the Guests of Honour.
Dr. Khajuria passed away last year. His family members were also present.
A Veterinary Surgeon by profession, Dr. Khajuria rose to the position of Managing Director of the erstwhile Jammu Milk Federation but his core interest remained in social service and welfare of the Divyang and other marginalized sections of the society.
The statue has been made by the nationally acclaimed sculptor, Ravinder Singh Jamwal.
B R Sharma complimented the SKK for paying tribute to its founder by installing his statue, making him immortal. Referring to Dr Khajuria, he said that only those persons lived in the hearts of the people forever who had done some things to uplift the lives of physically challenged and marginalized sections of society. He complimented these divyang students for their outstanding results in Board examinations and said that they have divine capabilities unlike normal students, and referred to winning 29 medals for India at Paris Paralympic against just six medals at Olympic. Dr Khajuria had seen divine capabilities in deaf & dumb students and established this School. Kuldeep Khoda recalled laudable contributions of late Dr. Khajuria for the society and said that despite his official engagements during Govt service, he spared time for the downtrodden and marginalized sections of the society because his heart was in these causes. He said that Dr. Khajuria established Savera NGO which runs a school at Channi to impart education to slum children. Another prominent organisation he established was Vichar Manch. He also founded the Confederation of Voluntary, Social and Charitable Organisations as he felt that unless these charitable bodies work unitedly, the desirable results would not be achieved. Dr Bhan called Dr Khajuria as Jammu’s Vinobha Bhave and said that he was an embodiment of unparalleled selflessness, humility, and commitment to the welfare of physically challenged persons and downtrodden. “Such noble persons are seldom born in this world”, he said and added that Dr. Khajuria would never lose sight of the larger goal of serving the society in real sense. He said that the best tribute to Dr. Khajuria would be to follow his ideals and work for neglected sections of the population whose welfare was at the core of his heart. He complimented Samaj Kalyan Kendra for taking steps to carry forward his mission. Inderjeet Khajuria, his younger brother, said that it was very rare that any organisation recognised the services of social activists and reformers, and by doing so today by SKK, it deserved appreciation. Installation of his statue in School premises would motivate many more to carry forward Dr Khajuria’s mission.
While paying tributes, Manmohan Wahi recalled his long association with late Dr. Khajuria in SKK and that he felt fortunate to be associated with a saintly and principled person like late Dr Khajuria. Dr Bhuvnesh Khajuria, his eldest son, in his brief speech, disclosed that his father had set up more than a dozen NGOs and always left its Presidentship after a few years and installed others to take the NGO forward as he was against monopolizing the organisation he had set up. Earlier, the President of the SKK, K B Jandial paid tributes to late Dr Khajuria and called him a saint who would punish himself by penalizing himself Rs 5000 with apology to a person with whom he had spoken in anger. He threw light on the establishment of SKK and the School by Dr Khajuria and said he was happy to fulfill his promise made at his condolence meeting last year to install his statue on his 92nd birthday. He said that dreams of late Dr Khajuria are also fulfilled by providing the best possible education to these 110 divyang in the school, many of them are getting distinctions in BOSE conducted examinations.
