DLSA observes World Mental Health Day with Jail inmates

KATHUA, Oct 10: In propos to the Action Plan issued by the J&K Legal Services Authority (JKLSA) for the month of October 2024 and under the directions of Chairman District Legal Services Authority, Kathua Jatinder Singh Jamwal (Principal District and Sessions Judge, Kathua) “World Mental Health Day” under the theme “Mental Health Challenges, their legal rights and issues related to mental health discrimination, confidentiality and access to treatment” was observed by DLSA Kathua at District Jail here. To mark the “World Mental Health Day” Secretary DLSA, Kathua Kamiya Singh Andotra joined hands with Government Medical College, Kathua to sensitize jail inmates of District Jail Kathua. Medical Officer Dr. Mukal Ubbott, was the resource person in the program. The resource person threw light on the significance of expressing and being open in discussing mental health issues like anxiety, depression, stress or any disorders faced by anyone. He also assured the inmates that any problem shared with the doctor shall be kept confidential, further appealed them to freely avail the services as and when required. Legal Aid Defense Counsels DLSA comprising of Deputy Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel Puneet Kumari, and Assistant Legal Aid Defense Counsel Kathua Nishant Singh, also awarded the inmates on the said topic.
The program was attended by staff of District Jail Kathua, jail inmates (50 in numbers) and para legal volunteer namely Rahul Kumar of DLSA Kathua.
