JMC organizes awareness, registration program for work animal owners

JAMMU, Oct 15: The Veterinary section of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) organized an awareness cum registration program today for work animal owners operating within JMC limits. The program aimed to educate owners of marriage buggies, horse carts, horses, ponies, mules, camels, donkeys, and other work animals about the benefits of registering their animals in compliance with the Prevention of Cruelty to Draught and Pack Animals Rules, 1965, and the J&K Municipal Corporation Act, 2000.
The event was attended by Dr. Devansh Yadav, IAS, Commissioner of JMC, along with Deputy Director Research of AHD Jammu, Dr. Rakesh Koul, MVO JMC Dr. Jaswant Singh, Lab officers Dr. Abhimanyu Chauhan and Dr. Ashwani Bassan, and VAS JMC Dr. Divya Sharma. During the program, Commissioner Yadav interacted with stakeholders, stressing the importance of registering work animals with JMC and the associated benefits.
The Veterinary team briefed participants on key issues such as the health and fitness status of work animals, appropriate working hours, load-bearing capacities, and animal welfare concerns. As part of the event, 30 registration certificates were issued on the spot following RFID tagging and blood sample examinations. Additionally, free rabies and tetanus vaccines were provided to 50 animals.
The JMC Veterinary section continues to conduct drives within its limits to address cruelty towards work animals and ensure that owners obtain proper licensing from the corporation.
