JAMMU, Oct 16: The training programme on "Value Addition of minor fruits in Kandi Area of Jammu: An opportunity to generate Rural Employment for Livelihood Security was organized by the Division of Agricultural Extension Education, SKUAST-Jammu under the JKST&IC sponsored project for the Rural Women & Youths of Purmandal Block of district Samba under noble guidance & dynamic leadership of Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. B.N. Tripathi. Prof Poonam Parihar PI of the Project informed the participants about the value addition of minor fruits which can substantially uplift rural livelihoods by creating a range of economic and social benefits.
She said that the value addition of minor fruits contributes to poverty reduction and livelihood enhancement as well as ensure household food and nutritional security adding women participation through employment and income generation.
She also highlighted that it enhances farmers' incomes by leveraging their unique qualities, nutritional benefits, and cultural significance, entrepreneurs can create innovative products, enhance agricultural incomes, and contribute to sustainable practices providing higher value products & also creates local jobs in processing and marketing. Dr Neerja Sharma, Chief Scientist, Horticulture, KVK, Samba & CoPI briefly explained that minor fruits with their diverse characteristics and untapped potential, offer significant opportunities for value addition and entrepreneurship.
She said that value addition is an important aspect of Agripreneurship, significantly enhancing the economic value of agricultural products through various processes and innovations. She also briefed the participants about the importance of value addition, industrial growth, urbanization & globalization & also laid practical demonstrations on Value addition of Karonda into many values added bi-products e.g., Karonda Squash & Karonda pickle etc.
The Programme was attended by S. Sarbjeet Singh, Senior Technical Assistant, Mr.Mukesh, Kumar, Artist cum photographer, Adarsh Jammoria, Project Assistant & Jamyang Lhamo Ph.D student of SKUAST-Jammu. The rural women & Youth beneficiaries who attended & participated in the training programme enjoyed the wonderful aroma & taste of juice of Karonda, ginger & lemon full of nutritional & medicinal values. The handouts/literature regarding processing, preservation & packaging were also distributed among the participants. The programme was concluded with a vote of thanks by S. Sarbjeet Singh.
