Early Times Report

Srinagar, Oct 20: Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha today celebrated a landmark occasion in Jammu and Kashmir by felicitating the winners of the first-ever Kashmir International Marathon. The event saw more than 1,700 runners from across India and 12 foreign nations participate in a 42 km Full Marathon and a 21 km Half Marathon, marking a significant milestone for the region on the global marathon map.
In his address, the Lt. Governor lauded the efforts of the Tourism Department, J&K Police, Security Forces, Youth Services & Sports Department, and other stakeholders for their roles in making the marathon a massive success.
He emphasized that this event represents a historic achievement for Jammu and Kashmir, reflecting the transformative leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
According to the Lt. Governor, the Prime Minister’s unwavering commitment to restoring peace and normalcy in J&K has made it possible for the region to host international events, including cricket matches, Formula-4 races, and prestigious global gatherings like the G20 Summit and International Yoga Day.
Lt. Governor Sinha also pointed to the record number of tourists visiting the region as evidence of J&K’s progress and prosperity.
He expressed optimism about the future, announcing plans to host a Jammu Marathon on a similar scale. These signature running events, he said, will not only bring athletes from around the world to J&K but also further boost the region’s burgeoning tourism industry.
Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty, present at the ceremony, praised J&K’s warm hospitality and natural beauty, stating that the region is on track to becoming a global hotspot for international events like marathons.
He expressed confidence that efforts will be made to attract more filmmakers to the scenic landscapes of Jammu and Kashmir.
The event was attended by several high-profile officials, including Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, Commissioner Secretary of the Tourism Department Yasha Mudgal, and Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir Sh. Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, along with prominent citizens, sportspersons, and youth.
Jammu and Kashmir is rapidly emerging as a destination for international sporting events, thanks to its ideal climate, rich cultural heritage, and breathtaking scenery.
The success of the Kashmir Marathon signals a bright future for sports tourism in the region.
