NC offers Deputy Speaker post to BJP
Strategic move to avoid confrontation with Union Govt
10/30/2024 10:37:34 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 30: In a bid to maintain political stability and avoid direct confrontation with the Union government, the National Conference (NC) has offered the Deputy Speaker’s position in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), according to party insiders.
This unprecedented move highlights the NC’s strategic approach in navigating the challenging political landscape of the Union Territory (UT) amid the upcoming legislative session.
The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is set to hold its first legislative assembly session since the revocation of Article 370 in August 2019.
The political dynamics have since shifted significantly, with the BJP attempting to consolidate power in the region, while traditional parties like the NC seek to retain their influence amidst these changes.
With elections concluded and a fractured mandate, the NC emerged as the largest single party but fell short of a majority. Its decision to extend the Deputy Speaker’s role to the BJP suggests a conciliatory approach aimed at establishing a working relationship with the Union government, which the BJP heads. This gesture underscores the NC’s effort to ease tensions, encourage collaboration, and facilitate smoother governance in the delicate context of Jammu and Kashmir.
Political analysts observe that the NC’s overture is likely motivated by a desire to foster a more cooperative atmosphere within the assembly. The Deputy Speaker position, though typically seen as largely symbolic, carries substantial influence over procedural matters and can be pi

otal in creating a harmonious legislative environment. For the NC, offering this position to the BJP could be a means of ensuring that the UT assembly operates without unnecessary friction.
Further, offering the Deputy Speaker’s post to the BJP on procedural fronts allows the NC to avoid possible punitive measures from the Union government, which has shown a firm stance against opposition in the region.
Sources within the NC indicate that the party is cautious about safeguarding its members and policies from potential federal interventions, including the risk of administrative blocks or procedural delays that could derail its legislative agenda.
The BJP’s response to the offer is awaited, though early indications suggest that the party may consider accepting the Deputy Speaker role to strengthen its foothold in the UT’s governance structure. While the BJP is not the majority party in the assembly, having one of its members as Deputy Speaker would enable it to have a greater say in legislative proceedings, which could be advantageous for the party’s policy goals and influence in J&K.
If the BJP accepts the Deputy Speaker role, it may pave the way for smoother legislative collaboration between the two major parties in the assembly. This arrangement could also enable the BJP to shape critical debates and influence the legislative agenda, even from a relatively minor position.
For both the BJP and NC, such an arrangement could reduce instances of deadlock, create opportunities for bipartisanship on critical issues, and project an image of a cooperative governance model in Jammu and Kashmir.
