Kashmir shivers amidst cold wave

SRINAGAR, Dec 15: The cold wave continues to grip the Kashmir Valley relentlessly, with a slight decrease in night temperatures, which, however, remained below the freezing point , officials said on Sunday.
The Meteorological Centre Srinagar said the cold wave will continue over many weather stations of Kashmir valley during the next few days. It said the weather will generally remain dry till December 21, the day the harshest part of the 40-day-long winter “Chilai-e-Kalan” will begin in Kashmir valley.
Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, had a low of minus 3.4°C recorded during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. This was 2.2°C below normal of 1.2°C during this period of the season for the place.
The night temperature at Qazigund slightly improved and recorded at minus 4.0°C against the minus 5.6°C on the previous night. This was 2.6°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir on Srinagar-Jammu National highway during the period.
Tourist spot of Pahalgam remained the coldest place at minus 8.4°C a day ago, recorded at minus 4.8°C on Sunday and this was 0.7°C below normal for the valley of shepherds in south Kashmir.
Kokernag had a low of 2.8°C against the 4.2°C recorded the previous night and this was 1.3°C below normal for the famous picnic spot of south Kashmir on the day.
The night temperature also improved at the ski resort of Gulmarg and recorded at minus 3.8°C against the minus 7.6°C a day ago. This was 1.2°C above normal for the valley of meadow in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on this day.
The frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara also recorded below 1.3°C against the normal of minus 1.5°C on Sunday, the MeT office.
