Omar’s statements unsettle J&K Cong leaders
12/16/2024 10:03:27 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 16: The Congress leadership in Jammu and Kashmir is reportedly unsettled by recent remarks made by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, which they view as a challenge to their position within the ruling alliance.
With hopes of securing a ministerial berth and a Rajya Sabha seat, Congress leaders are now grappling with the implications of Abdullah’s statements that appear to undermine the party’s role and aspirations in the state’s political landscape.
In a statement that has caused significant discomfort among Congress ranks, Omar Abdullah questioned the Congress’s dominance in leading the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), a coalition of opposition parties aimed at countering the BJP at the national level. By raising doubts about Congress’s hegemony within the alliance, Abdullah has stirred concerns about the National Conference’s willingness to accommodate its ally in a meaningful capacity.
Adding to Congress’s worries, the Chief Minister echoed the BJP’s stance on the reliability of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), an issue that has long been a bone of contention between the ruling BJP and the opposition. Abdullah’s endorsement of the BJP’s position on EVMs has further strained the fragile ties between the National Conference and Congress, raising questions about the stability of the alliance.
The timing of these remarks has heightened the unease among Congress leaders, who were expecting to be rewarded with positions of power in the government. According to sources, the Congress leadership views Abdullah’s statements as a signal that the National Conference is unwilling to further accommodate the grand old party within the ruling setup. This has led to growing apprehension about the Congress’s diminishing influence in both state and national politics.
The National Conference, which has managed to secure a comfortable majority in the Assembly with the support of Independents and MLAs from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Aam Aadmi Party, is in a strong position to govern without relying heavily on the Congress. This numerical advantage has only fueled concerns among Congress leaders that their role in the government could be reduced to a mere formality.
While the Congress leadership in Jammu and Kashmir has refrained from issuing an official statement, insiders reveal that high-level discussions are underway to assess the implications of Abdullah’s remarks and chart a strategy to safeguard the party’s interests. The developments come at a time when the Congress is already grappling with challenges to its leadership within the INDIA alliance at the national level.
Political analysts suggest that the recent statements by Omar Abdullah could be a calculated move to assert the National Conference’s autonomy and bargaining power within the alliance. However, the repercussions of these statements could strain the coalition dynamics in the state, potentially impacting governance and the long-term stability of the alliance.
As the situation unfolds, all eyes are on the Congress leadership’s next move. Will the party choose to confront Abdullah over his remarks, or will it adopt a more conciliatory approach to secure its place in the government? For now, the uneasy alliance between the Congress and the National Conference remains a subject of intense speculation in Jammu and Kashmir’s political circles.
