KVK Reasi promotes Hill Garlic Production

REASI, Dec 27: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) is promoting and educating farmers on hill garlic production. KVK Reasi is working under the dynamic stewardship of Vice Chancellor, Prof. B.N. Tripathi and able guidance of Director Extension (DE), Prof. Amrish Vaid of SKUAST-J. Chief Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, Dr. Banarsi Lal said that KVK is guiding farmers on the commercial cultivation of hill garlic and encourging them for its area enhancement. He said that farmers can fetch more returns by growing it organically.
He further said that KVK is creating awareness on the health benefits of hill garlic and guiding farmers on the management of diseases and nutrients in hill garlic. He informed that organic garlic, turmeric and ginger are helpful to improve the health status of human beings by improving the immunity in the body.
He added that value addition in garlic can open some new avenues of income and employment in rural areas.He stressed on the organic cultivation of hill garlic for more returns. He informed that organic and natural farming is helpful in the production of safe and quality spices by reducing the cost of cultivation. He narrated that Reasi distt. has an immense potential in the cultivation of hill garlic.He further expressed that some pockets of the distt. are heavily infested with the monkeys menace as monkeys damage the main crops and thus directly affect the farmers income.
He narrated that hill garlic, turmeric and ginger are viable alternative crops in monkeys' prone areas. He added that KVK is guiding farmers on the preparation of organic formulations such as beejamrit, jeevamrit, Panchgavya, fermented butter milk etc. and elaborating their usages to produce the organic hill garlic.
He also said that KVK is suggesting the farmers to use Ghanjeevamrit, Neemastra, organic fungicides, manures etc. to produce the organic garlic. By observing the benefits of hill garlic many new farmers showed keen interest towards the cultivation of this crop.
