Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 1: Although the Union Territory administration has not dropped any hint to change the list of holidays for 2025, leaders of the ruling National Conference are confident that they will restore holidays on December 5 and July 13. After Nasir Aslam Wani, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s advisor, announced that December 5 would soon be declared a public holiday, the ruling National Conference (NC) reaffirmed its commitment to also reinstate July 13 as a holiday. Both dates, central to Jammu and Kashmir’s history, were excluded from the Union Territory administration's official holiday list, sparking significant political controversy.
Addressing media on Wednesday, NC spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq emphasized the historical significance of the dates. “I assure you that both December 5 and July 13 will be declared as holidays soon. These dates carry immense importance in the political history of Jammu and Kashmir,” Sadiq stated.
Sadiq defended the party’s demand for December 5, the birth anniversary of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, known as “Sher-e-Kashmir,” to be reinstated as a public holiday. Responding to criticism from leaders questioning why the NC is not advocating holidays for other former Chief Ministers, Sadiq highlighted Sheikh Abdullah’s unique contributions.
“Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was more than a Chief Minister; he was the Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir,” Sadiq remarked, underscoring the late leader’s revolutionary policies, including the “Land to the Tillers” initiative that restructured the region’s agrarian economy.

no holiday for Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, why is the same standard not applied to Maharaja Hari Singh?” he asked, referencing the recently declared holiday for the late Maharaja’s birthday.
Reiterating NC’s priorities, Sadiq affirmed the party’s commitment to restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, which was downgraded to a Union Territory in 2019. “Our government is fully committed to restoring statehood. Additionally, the traditional Darbar Move exercise, a symbol of unity and governance in Jammu and Kashmir, will also be resumed,” he announced.
Sadiq criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the state’s current political status, accusing the party of being responsible for the downgrade. He countered BJP leaders’ allegations about the Omar Abdullah-led administration’s inefficiency, highlighting the NC government’s focus on preserving the region’s heritage and historical identity.
On Tuesday, Nasir Aslam Wani reaffirmed that the government was actively considering the declaration of December 5 as a public holiday. “The decision will be finalized before December 5,” Wani stated, underscoring the party’s commitment to honoring Sheikh Abdullah’s legacy.
The holidays in question reflect key moments in Jammu and Kashmir’s history. December 5 marks the birth anniversary of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, a pivotal figure in the region’s political evolution.
By advocating the reinstatement of these holidays, the NC seeks to emphasize its dedication to preserving the region’s cultural and historical identity while addressing the public sentiment attached to these dates.
