From terrorism to gang wars, Jammu Police gear up to tackle new challenges

Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 23: Amid growing concerns over the rising activities of gangsters and criminal syndicates in the Jammu-Samba-Kathua (JSK) region, a high-level meeting was convened by Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Shiv Kumar Sharma today. The meeting focused on tackling the increasing challenges posed by gang wars, extortion rackets, and land mafias in addition to the ongoing fight against terrorism.
The DIG highlighted the alarming rise in gang-related incidents across areas such as Ramgarh, Vijaypur, Bishnah, Bari Brahmana, and RS Pura. These regions have reportedly turned into hotspots for organized crime, including highway robberies, drug smuggling, and land disputes fueled by mafia groups. Criminal networks with links to land mafias and drug syndicates have made the situation more complex, leaving the police with a dual challenge of maintaining law and order while combating terrorism.
The meeting, attended by Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs), Additional Superintendents of Police (Addl SPs), and Zonal Superintendents of Police, marked the first such comprehensive strategy session to address gang-related crimes.
Comprehensive Plan to Combat Gangsters and Organized Crime
During the meeting, DIG Sharma emphasized the urgent need for a coordinated crackdown on criminal networks and laid out a series of directives to curb gangster activities:
Financial Network Disruption: Officers were directed to identify and dismantle the financial networks of gangsters, including seizing properties acquired through illegal means such as extortion, land grabbing, and drug trafficking.
Targeting Support Systems: The DIG instructed officials to closely monitor and take legal action against individuals or groups providing support, shelter, or assistance to gangsters, including relatives and associates.
Illegal Vehicle Crackdown: A massive drive will be launched against vehicles with illegal modifications, such as tinted glasses, loud music systems, criminal-style modifications, and missing number plates.
Crackdown on Illegal Weapons and Land Grabbing: Strict legal action was directed against individuals found possessing illegal weapons, engaging in land grabbing, or threatening public safety.
Public Awareness and Support: Parents, civil society, and responsible citizens were urged to actively collaborate with law enforcement in spreading awareness about the dangers of criminal activities and supporting efforts to dismantle these networks.
In a related incident that underscores the severity of the situation, a gangster was shot dead in broad daylight at the busy Jewel Chowk area of Jammu city on Tuesday. The victim, identified as 37-year-old Sumit Jandial alias Gataru of Vijaypur, Samba, was ambushed by unidentified gunmen while driving a Thar SUV.
The assailants stopped Jandial’s vehicle and fired multiple gunshots, leaving him critically injured. He succumbed to his injuries on the spot. The incident, which occurred amid heightened security ahead of Republic Day, has raised questions about public safety and the growing audacity of criminal elements.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the law at Police Station Nowabad, and investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the culprits.
DIG Sharma reiterated the police’s commitment to restoring peace and ensuring a safe environment in the Jammu-Samba-Kathua region. "The activities of gangsters and criminals pose a serious threat to the peace and security of the region. The police will take all necessary measures to break their networks and bring them to justice," he said.
The Jammu Police have urged the public to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and support law enforcement efforts to combat organized crime. As the crackdown intensifies, the administration hopes to address these challenges effectively and restore public confidence in the region’s safety and security.
