GDC Kathua celebrates World Wetlands Day 2025

KATHUA, Feb 3: The Department of Environmental Sciences, in collaboration with the Ravi Eco Club and NSS Units of Government Degree College (GDC) Kathua, celebrated World Wetlands Day 2025 with great enthusiasm. This year's theme, "Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future," emphasized the crucial role wetlands play in environmental conservation and sustainability.
To mark the occasion, a Poster Making Competition was organized on the said theme under the guidance of the Worthy Principal, Prof. Seema Mir. The competition was conducted in the Department of Environmental Sciences under the supervision of Prof. Arvind Kumar, Head, Department of Environmental Sciences, Dr. Hilal Ahmed Dar, and Dr. Anjali Devi.
The posters were meticulously evaluated by a panel of esteemed judges, including Dr. Yash Paul Sharma (HoD, Urdu), Dr. Kulbir Singh (HoD, Mathematics), and Dr. Pritima Sangra NSS PO. The competition saw active participation from students, showcasing their creative expressions and deep understanding of wetland conservation.
The winners of the competition were Nitika Verma , Khushbo Mehra, and Tanvi Sharma who bagged 1st 2nd and 3rd positions respectively where as Riya sharma and Hinna sharma were adjudge for consolation prizes.
On the occasion, Prof. Arvind Kumar engaged students in a discussion about the significance of wetlands and their ecological importance. He highlighted how wetlands act as natural water filters, provide habitat for diverse species, and mitigate climate change effects.
Prof. Seema Mir, Principal of the College addressed the students, commending their efforts and encouraging them to take proactive steps toward environmental conservation. She emphasized the need for collective action to protect wetlands for a sustainable future. Such initiatives continue to foster environmental awareness and responsibility among students, reinforcing their role as future custodians of nature
