Early Times Report

Udhampur, Feb 7: Government Medical College (GMC) Udhampur has been without a principal since December 31, 2024, following the retirement of Dr. Mrityunjay Gupta.
More than a month has passed, and the lack of leadership has led to growing concerns among students, faculty, and hospital staff.
The absence of a principal has resulted in administrative delays, affecting academic schedules, faculty approvals, and hospital management. Students preparing for exams are struggling with a lack of clear directives, while faculty members are awaiting approvals for research and other academic matters.
While temporary arrangements have been made, the long-term impact of this leadership vacuum remains uncertain.
A faculty member, speaking anonymously, expressed concern: “ Without a principal, decision-making is slow, and important matters are being delayed. We need strong leadership to ensure the smooth functioning of the institution
Without a principal, decision-making is slow, and important matters are being delayed.
We need strong leadership to ensure the smooth functioning of the institution.
The college’s official website still lists the principal’s email as [email protected], but provides no updates on the leadership situation.
"
Students are also feeling the pressure, as research approvals and other academic processes are stalled. “We don’t know whom to approach for major concerns," said a final-year student.
Despite these challenges, GMC Udhampur continues to operate with the support of faculty and administrative staff. However, frustration is growing as no official announcement has been made regarding the appointment of a new principal. The college’s official website still lists the principal’s email as [email protected], but provides no updates on the leadership situation.
When contacted, Cabinet Minister for Health and Medical Education, Sakina Masood Itoo, assured that the issue will be addressed soon. “ A principal will be appointed at GMC Udhampur shortly. The most senior faculty member will be given the position based on seniority," she stated.
With academic and hospital operations at stake, students and faculty now eagerly await the fulfillment of this promise.
