| Discontent brewing among NC legislators for getting limited time in Assembly | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 13: Discontent is brewing among legislators of the ruling National Conference (NC) over the limited time allotted to them for raising issues concerning their respective constituencies during the ongoing budget session of the Legislative Assembly. A day after Mushtaq Guroo, NC MLA from Srinagar’s Channapora Assembly segment, voiced his frustration over not being given sufficient time to speak in the House, other party legislators followed suit, airing their grievances publicly.
On Thursday, National Conference MLAs Aijaz Jan from Poonch and Bashir Ahmad Veeri from Bijbehara expressed similar discontent over being sidelined during Assembly proceedings.
Upon finally getting an opportunity to speak, Aijaz Jan reminded the House that he was elected with nearly 42,000 votes, securing victory by a margin of over 20,000 votes. He emphasized that he had a mandate from the people and deserved the chance to raise their concerns in the Assembly.
Meanwhile, Bashir Ahmad Veeri did not hold back his criticism, openly challenging the authority of the party’s chief whip and his deputy. “The dictatorship of the party’s chief whip and his deputy will not work in this House,” Veeri asserted, his statement drawing loud applause from the opposition benches.
The growing dissent within the party was first highlighted on Wednesday when Mushtaq Guroo expressed his frustration over not being allowed to contribute to the budget discussion. “First of all, I want to thank the Speaker for giving me the opportunity to speak for the first time in this august House. However, I was not given a chance to participate in the budget debate,” Guroo stated.
Before concluding his speech, Guroo reaffirmed his legitimacy as an elected representative. “I am not here through nomination. I am a member of this House with the support and blessings of the people of Channapora who have elected me as their representative,” he declared.
The public outburst of these MLAs underscores a growing sense of frustration among ruling party legislators, hinting at possible internal discord within the National Conference. |
