Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 16: To strengthen their campaign further to aware the common populace about the ill effects of Cardiovascular diseases Head Department of Cardiology GMCH Jammu Dr. Sushil Sharma held a day long cardiac awareness cum health check up camp at Shiv Mandir, Panchayat Mishriwala , Block Bhalwal Jammu. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the risks associated with physical inactivity and its impact on heart health. During the camp, the team screened high-risk patients, identifying individuals who may be more susceptible to cardiac issues. This proactive approach helped in early detection and prevention, encouraging participants to adopt healthier lifestyles.
While interacting with the people Dr Sushil stated that heart diseases remains the leading cause of mortality worldwide and World Health Organization (WHO) has identified physical inactivity as one of the top risk factors for non-communicable diseases, including heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. Despite medical advancements, the increasing prevalence of heart-related issues suggests that lifestyle choices play a crucial role in determining heart health. In the modern era, technological advancements have reshaped the way people work, communicate, and entertain themselves. While these innovations have brought convenience and efficiency, they have also introduced a significant health challenge—a sedentary lifestyle. A sedentary lifestyle, characterized by prolonged sitting and minimal physical activity, has become increasingly prevalent due to desk jobs, digital entertainment, and rural as well as urban living. This lifestyle has been linked to numerous health concerns, with cardiac ailments being one of the most severe consequences.
He elaborated that with the rise of remote work, digital learning, and automated services, people are moving less than ever before, which significantly contributes to the increasing rates of cardiac ailments. The heart is a muscle that requires regular exercise to maintain its efficiency. When the body is inactive for prolonged periods, several physiological changes occur that can negatively affect heart health.
Some are the key ways in which a sedentary lifestyle contributes to cardiac ailments includes increased Risk of Obesity, Elevated Blood Pressure (Hypertension), High Cholesterol and Arterial Blockages, Insulin Resistance and Type 2 Diabetes, Poor Blood Circulation and Increased Risk of Blood Clots, Weakened Heart Muscles and Reduced Endurance. Beyond physical health, a sedentary lifestyle also affects mental well-being, which indirectly impacts heart health.
He added that despite the alarming risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle, heart health can be significantly improved by incorporating physical activity and healthier habits into daily routines. Some effective strategies to combat inactivity and promote cardiovascular wellness include Regular Physical Activity, Frequent Breaks from Sitting, Healthy Dietary Habits, Stress Management and Mental Well-Being, Avoiding Harmful Habits, Staying Hydrated and Maintaining Proper Posture, He Said.
In his concluding remarks Dr Sushil Sharma told that sedentary lifestyle has become one of the biggest threats to heart health in the modern world. The increasing prevalence of cardiac ailments linked to inactivity highlights the urgent need for lifestyle modifications. While technological advancements have made life more convenient, they have also contributed to reduced movement and increased health risks. However, the power to reverse these effects lies in conscious lifestyle choices. By incorporating regular physical activity, maintaining a balanced diet, managing stress, and avoiding harmful habits, individuals can significantly reduce their risk of heart disease. A strong and active heart is essential for a long and healthy life, and it is never too late to make positive changes. After all, movement is the key to vitality, and a healthy heart is the foundation of a fulfilling life.
