Police remand of accused extended
3/16/2026 10:48:31 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 16: In the alleged firing incident targeting National Conference president and former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah, Court on Monday extended the police remand of the accused till March 23, 2026, for sustained interrogation.
The accused, identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, son of late Ajit Singh and a resident of Purani Mandi, Jammu, was produced before the court by a member of the Special Investigation Team (SIT). He is facing investigation in connection with FIR No. 29/2026 registered at Police Station Gangyal, Jammu, under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 3/25 of the Arms Act.
The prosecution sought further custody of the accused on the ground that sustained interrogation was required to probe the motive behind the alleged firing incident and to ascertain all circumstances connected with the case. After hearing the matter, the court allowed extension of police custody till March 23.
Earlier, on March 12, the accused had been sent to five-day police remand by the court after police stated that custodial interrogation was necessary to verify the motive behind the attack and to examine whether he had any link with any organisation or individual. The court had also directed the police to ensure his medical examination every 24 hours.
The incident had triggered security concerns owing to the high-profile nature of the target, and the investigation is being closely monitored by the SIT. (JNF)
