BJP prepares for Nagrota by-election
Likely to announce candidate after consultations

Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 18: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has kicked off preparations for the upcoming by-election in the Nagrota assembly segment, expected to take place in April.
This seat fell vacant following the untimely demise of its political stalwart and BJP leader Devender Singh Rana.
While the party has yet to officially name its candidate, sources indicate that Divyani Rana, daughter of the late Devender Singh Rana, is set to contest this prestigious seat, widely regarded as a Rana family stronghold.
According to party insiders, the BJP’s strategy for the by-election was hammered out during a Core Group meeting held two days ago. The meeting focused on consolidating support and ensuring a unified front for the polls.
Although Divyani Rana has emerged as the frontrunner, the party leadership plans to consult key local leaders before making an official announcement. Sources revealed that discussions with Jugal Kishore Sharma, a prominent BJP leader, and his brother Nand Kishore Sharma are on the agenda to secure their backing and maintain cohesion among the party cadre.

With the by-election drawing near, the BJP is leaving no stone unturned to retain its grip on Nagrota. This is a critical test for the party in Jammu.
he death of Devender Singh Rana, a towering figure in Jammu and Kashmir politics, who had nurtured the constituency for over 15 years. Rana’s record-breaking victory in the 2024 assembly elections—winning by a margin of 30,574 votes, the highest in the region—underscored his dominance in Nagrota, making it a prized seat for the BJP.
Party sources emphasized that the decision to field Divyani Rana reflects an intent to leverage the family’s legacy while appealing to voters’ emotional connect with the late leader. However, the leadership is keen to avoid internal rifts, prompting the planned outreach to senior figures like the Sharma brothers. “Unity is our strength, and we are ensuring all stakeholders are on board,” a senior BJP functionary said on condition of anonymity.
With the by-election drawing near, the BJP is leaving no stone unturned to retain its grip on Nagrota. Political observers see this as a critical test for the party in Jammu, especially after Rana’s passing left a significant void. An official announcement regarding Divyani Rana’s candidacy is expected soon, setting the stage for a high-stakes contest in April.
