Early Times Report

Akhnoor, Apr 8: The Department of English at Government Degree College, Akhnoor, organized a one-day seminar and student-led PowerPoint presentation session on “Diasporic Themes and Literature on Human Rights.” The event served as a vibrant academic platform for students and scholars to engage with issues of displacement, identity, cultural hybridity, and social justice as reflected in literature.
The event commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Monika Malhotra, Head of the Department of English, who emphasized the growing significance of diasporic narratives in today’s globalized world. She delivered a compelling lecture highlighting the complexities of identity crises and cultural negotiation in diasporic texts.
Under the guidance of the esteemed Principal, Dr. Romilla Malla Bhat, students from Semester IV and Semester VI presented a series of insightful PowerPoint presentations. They critically examined works by noted authors such as Jhumpa Lahiri, V.S. Naipaul, Vijay Tendulkar, and Mulk Raj Anand. The presentations explored key themes like nostalgia, alienation, assimilation, racism, discrimination, and the fight for justice and human rights.
The session concluded with an engaging Q&A round, fostering a stimulating discussion among faculty and students. Faculty members including Dr. Anju Bala, Dr. Shashi Sharma, Dr. Rajiv Katoch, and Dr. Neelam Thappa also shared their perspectives on the discussed themes.
The Department of English expressed gratitude to all participants and reiterated its commitment to encouraging literary exploration and academic dialogue within the college community.
