Amit Shah calls for intensified anti-terror push amid rising attacks in Jammu region
4/8/2025 10:29:18 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 8: In response to a spate of recent terror attacks rattling Jammu province—particularly in the districts of Udhampur, Kathua, Reasi, Poonch, and Rajouri—Union Home Minister Amit Shah has called for an aggressive escalation of anti-terror operations across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
The directive comes as part of a broader strategy to dismantle the networks fueling violence and unrest, which have increasingly threatened the region’s stability.
Shah issued the statement following a high-level security review meeting held at Raj Bhawan in Srinagar, chaired alongside Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.
The meeting brought together senior officials from the Indian Army, paramilitary forces, intelligence agencies, and the Jammu and Kashmir Police to assess the security landscape and chart a decisive course of action.
Shah reaffirmed the Union Government’s unwavering commitment under Prime Minister Narendra Modi to transform Jammu and Kashmir into a secure and prosperous region.
Taking to his social media account, the Home Minister elaborated on the Modi administration’s multi-faceted security approach, which he credited for significantly weakening terrorist activities in the region. “Agencies have crippled terror in J&K through the Modi govt’s multi-pronged approach to security,” Shah wrote. “Instructed to further intensify anti-terror offensives by advanced vigilance and seamless mutual coordination to achieve the goal of uprooting terror for good.” His words underscore a renewed resolve to not only counter immediate threats but also eradicate the ideological and logistical underpinnings of terrorism in the Union Territory.
Shah’s Kashmir visit, which began on Monday evening, was marked by a series of engagements reflecting both strategic and symbolic intent.
Upon arriving in the Kashmir Valley, he made an emotional stop at the residence of Kirti Chakra awardee Deputy Superintendent of Police Humayun Muzammil Bhat, who lost his life in action in 2023. Bhat, posthumously honored for his bravery, lost his life alongside three other security personnel during a fierce encounter with terrorists in the dense forests near Gadool village in Kokernag, Anantnag district, in September 2023.
The Home Minister spent nearly 20 minutes with Bhat’s father, retired Inspector General of Police Ghulam Hassan Bhat, offering condolences and reinforcing the government’s solidarity with its fallen heroes. From there, Shah proceeded to Raj Bhawan to commence the security deliberations.
The backdrop to Shah’s visit is a worrying uptick in terrorist incidents, particularly in the Jammu province, which had previously been considered less volatile compared to the Kashmir Valley. Districts like Kathua, Udhampur, Rajouri, Poonch, and Reasi have witnessed ambushes and targeted attacks, raising concerns about a potential shift in terror focus. Security analysts suggest these incidents may be part of a broader strategy by hostile elements to destabilize the region, necessitating the kind of robust response Shah has advocated.
To ensure the Home Minister’s safety and the smooth conduct of his visit, security was significantly tightened across Kashmir. Armed personnel were deployed in large numbers, with checkpoints and patrols intensified in Srinagar and surrounding areas. The heightened measures reflect the gravity of the situation and the government’s determination to maintain order amid rising threats.
Shah’s emphasis on “advanced vigilance” and “seamless mutual coordination” points to a strategy that leverages cutting-edge technology, intelligence-sharing, and inter-agency collaboration.
This approach builds on previous successes credited to the Modi government, such as the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 and subsequent efforts to integrate Jammu and Kashmir more fully into India’s security and development framework.
However, the persistence of terror attacks indicates that challenges remain, requiring not just reactive measures but also proactive efforts to disrupt recruitment, financing, and cross-border support for terrorism.
As Shah concluded his engagements, his message was clear: the fight against terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir is entering a critical phase. With the Union Government doubling down on its commitment, the coming months will likely see an intensified crackdown aimed at neutralizing threats and restoring peace to a region long plagued by conflict.
