GDC Thannamandi Celebrates World Earth Day

Thannamandi, Apr 22: The Department of Environmental Sciences, Eco-club, NSS, NCC and Beautification Committee of Government Degree College (GDC) Thannamandi in collaboration with Municipal Committee Thannamandi celebrated World Earth Day as part of Viksit Bharat@2047 Abhiyan here today.
On this occasion a series of activities aligning this year’s theme “Our Power, Our Planet,” organized under the guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Farooq Ahmed, Principal of College. Dr. Junaid Ahmed, Head of Department Environmental Science in the college co-ordinated the event.
The day’s celebrations began with the introduction, historical background and importance of Earth Day by Dr. Ashaq Malik, Head of the Department of Botany, and address by Principal Prof. Farooq Ahmed who underscored various ways to save planet Earth including adaptation of renewable energy, reducing carbon footprints, conserving water, minimizing plastic usage, and promoting forestation.
It was followed by a pledge ceremony, by Dr. Nagina Kouser, Head, Department of Economics, wherein students and staff reaffirmed their dedication to protecting the environment and adopting sustainable practices. This was followed by a plantation drive in which students, faculty members and municipality personnel participated in plantation drive across the college campus, symbolizing their commitment to a greener future.
In addition, a major cleanliness drive was conducted throughout the college premises.
In a notable initiative during the campus-wide cleanliness drive, biodegradable bags were distributed among students to collect waste, emphasizing the importance of using eco-friendly alternatives to plastic. Students and staff enthusiastically participated in cleaning efforts, promoting the message of hygiene, waste management, and the need for collective action to safeguard natural resources.
Taking the message beyond the campus, the NSS and NCC units organized a door-to-door awareness campaign in the surrounding areas. Under the guidance of NSS Programme Officer Prof. Supriya Gupta and Prof. Altaf Hussain, NCC Officer, the volunteers made the households aware about critical issues such as energy conservation, the use of biodegradable alternatives and the importance of adopting solar energy solutions. Residents were encouraged to shift towards cleaner energy sources and eco-friendly practices in their daily lives.
All faculty members of the college participated actively in the day’s events, showcasing a united commitment to the cause. Notable participants included Dr. Nazakat Hussain (HoD, History), Dr. Nazar ul Islam (HoD, Islamic Studies), Dr. Gohar Iqbal (HoD, Arabic), Dr. Gulshan Rashid Bhat (HoD, Geography), Dr. Shiraz Ahmed (HoD, Zoology), Prof. Fatima Parveen, Prof. Rizwana Kouser, Dr. Shazia Poswal, Prof. Neeru Sayed, Prof. Ashraf, Shafqat Hussain, Maqsood Ahmed, Ajaz Ahmed along with others from various departments who played key roles in organizing and supporting the initiatives.
