Deep Wounds Inflicted
4/23/2025 11:17:42 PM
The serene landscapes of Baisaran in Pahalgam, popularly known as “Mini Switzerland” were shattered on Tuesday when terrorists launched a brutal attack on tourists in the meadow, resulting in the deaths of 26 individuals, mostly tourists.
This incident stands as the deadliest assault on civilians in J&K since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. The assailants targeted tourists hailing from various parts of the country, including Maharashtra, Gujarat and other states. The attack not only claimed lives but also instilled fear, leading to a mass exodus of tourists and a significant blow to the local economy, heavily reliant on tourism.
In response, Prime Minister Narendra Modi cut short his visit to Saudi Arabia, returning to India to oversee the situation. Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the attack site, meeting survivors and coordinating the security response. The Army initiated counter-terrorism operations, including the deployment of HAL Dhruv helicopters.
The international community condemned the attack, with leaders from the United States, United Kingdom, France, and the United Nations expressing solidarity with India and denouncing terrorism.
While the government has vowed a strong response, it’s imperative to address the underlying issues fueling such extremism.
The Pahalgam tragedy is a stark reminder of the fragility of peace in the region. It calls for a comprehensive approach that combines robust security measures with efforts to address socio-political grievances. Only through such a multifaceted strategy can lasting peace and stability be achieved in Jammu and Kashmir.
In an unprecedented display of unity and grief, the people of Kashmir observed a complete shutdown to condemn the horrific terror attack in Pahalgam. This collective act of mourning and protest marks the first Kashmir-wide shutdown against terrorism in over three decades, signaling a significant shift in public sentiment and a resolute stand against violence.
This spontaneous and widespread shutdown reflects a profound transformation in the public psyche of Kashmir. Historically, shutdowns in the region have been politically motivated or in response to actions by security forces. However, this instance stands out as a grassroots movement, transcending political affiliations and communal lines, unified in grief and a collective denunciation of violence.
The attack has not only inflicted deep wounds on the victims’ families but also dealt a severe blow to the region’s burgeoning tourism industry, a vital component of Kashmir’s economy. The mass exodus of tourists following the attack underscores the far-reaching implications of such acts of terror on the socio-economic fabric of the region.
The unified response from the people of Jammu and Kashmir sends a clear message: the era of silence and apathy towards terrorism is over. The collective mourning and unequivocal condemnation of the Pahalgam attack signify a renewed commitment to peace and a rejection of violence as a means to any end.
