Early Times Report RAMGARH, May 3: Government Degree College (GDC) Ramgarh commemorated World Press Freedom Day 2025 by organizing a thought-provoking lecture focused on the evolving role of media in the digital age. Held under the guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Meeru Abrol, Principal of the College, the event explored this year's global theme-"Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media." Coordinated by Prof. Brham Dutt, the session featured an insightful lecture delivered by Mr. Ashok Kumar, who served as the Resource Person. In his address, Mr. Kumar delved into the dual nature of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism. He highlighted its potential to enhance news reporting through faster content generation, real-time fact-checking, and multilingual accessibility, while also cautioning against the threats posed by AI-such as deepfakes, algorithmic bias, and the erosion of traditional revenue models for independent journalism. Reflecting on the historical significance of the day, Mr. Kumar reminded the audience of the 1991 Windhoek Declaration, which laid the foundation for World Press Freedom Day, officially recognized by UNESCO and the United Nations General Assembly in 1993. He stressed that press freedom is not only central to democracy but also vital for protecting human rights, ensuring transparency, and promoting informed civic participation. The event saw enthusiastic participation from faculty and students alike. Among the attendees were Dr. Snobar, Prof. Sandeep Kumari, Prof. Brham Dutt, Dr. Shivali Panjgotra, Ms. Priya Sharma, Ms. Anjali Devi, Dr. Susheel Kumar, and Ms. Sayema. Students engaged actively with the topic, expressing deep interest in the intersections of media, technology, and truth. The session concluded with a collective commitment to uphold press freedom, combat the rising tide of disinformation, and promote media literacy among the youth in an increasingly AI-influenced world. |
