Jammu Cong leaders concerned over controversial remarks by Kashmir colleagues | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 3: In the wake of the devastating Pahalgam terror attack, heightened emotions across the nation have intensified tensions within the Congress party in Jammu and Kashmir. Jammu-based Congress leaders are grappling with the fallout from controversial statements made by some of their Kashmir-based counterparts regarding actions against Pakistan. Despite warnings from the Congress high command to refrain from commenting on the Pahalgam attack, certain Kashmir-based leaders continue to issue polarizing statements, causing significant discomfort among their Jammu colleagues. Notably, senior leader and former Union Minister Saifuddin Soz recently triggered a firestorm by suggesting that India should consider Pakistan’s denial of involvement in the April 22 attack, which claimed the lives of 26 tourists in Bairsaran. His remarks have sparked outrage and embarrassment among Jammu-based party members. Party sources reveal that Jammu leaders are particularly frustrated given the widespread public grief and anger following the tragedy. They have labeled Soz’s comments as “ill-timed and insensitive,” emphasizing the need for the party to demonstrate unwavering unity against terrorism during this delicate period. Soz’s call for dialogue with Pakistan and his suggestion to temporarily accept Pakistan’s denial pending further investigation have deepened the rift between the Jammu and Kashmir units of the Congress. Jammu leaders fear that such statements could provoke a strong public backlash, further damaging the party’s standing. “Thi Jammu Congress leaders are grappling with the fallout from controversial statements made by some of their Kashmir-based counterparts regarding actions against Pakistan. Kashmir-based leaders continue to issue polarizing statements, causing significant discomfort among their Jammu colleagues. is not the moment to extend olive branches to Pakistan. The public is grieving and demands strong action against terrorism, not conciliatory gestures,” said a senior Jammu-based Congress leader, speaking anonymously. “Such remarks make the party appear out of touch with reality, which has already cost us dearly in Hindu-majority constituencies in the 2014 and 2024 Assembly elections.” The controversy unfolds against a backdrop of internal strife, with some Jammu-based leaders recently protesting against Kashmir-based party leadership outside the Congress headquarters in New Delhi. Party insiders warn that Soz’s statements could exacerbate the growing divide between the two regional units, complicating efforts to maintain cohesion. While some Kashmir-based Congress members have tacitly supported Soz’s push for dialogue, many in Jammu argue that his comments risk alienating voters at a pivotal moment. The Congress has officially distanced itself from these remarks, clarifying that only statements from party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and authorized All India Congress Committee (AICC) office-bearers reflect the party’s position. In a post on X, Congress General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh reiterated, “The Congress Working Committee passed a resolution on April 24 condemning the brutal Pahalgam attack. The views of Shri Mallikarjun Kharge, Shri Rahul Gandhi, and authorized AICC office-bearers alone represent the INC’s stance. Statements by other leaders do not reflect the party’s position, especially at this sensitive time.” |
