Early Times Report

Jammu, May 6: For the first time since the 1971 India-Pakistan war, residents of Jammu and Kashmir will experience a civil defense mock drill on Wednesday, amid escalating border tensions. The exercise, a first for those born after 1971, has sparked anxiety across the Union Territory, where such drills were notably absent during the 1999 Kargil conflict and the 2001 Parliament attack aftermath.
The mock drill aims to prepare civilians and test government response systems for emergencies like attacks or war. Real-life scenarios will include citywide blackouts, air raid siren tests, sheltering procedures, and emergency operations. Civilians, students, and volunteers will receive hands-on training in safety protocols, first aid, and evacuation techniques.

teers to organize the drill.
Warning Systems: Air raid sirens will be tested to ensure functionality and public responsiveness.
Blackout Simulations: Lights will be switched off at designated locations to practice concealing critical infrastructure from potential air raids.
Evacuation Drills: Civilians in vulnerable border areas will rehearse evacuating to shelters or bunkers.
Training: Practical sessions will equip participants with skills in first aid, safety procedures, and emergency evacuation.
Protecting Infrastructure: Key installations like hospitals, power stations, and military bases will be camouflaged or fortified in simulated scenarios.
Assessment: Post-drill, officials will evaluate performance, identify gaps, and issue reports to improve future preparedness.
Elderly residents recall the 1971 drill as a stark reminder of wartime readiness, while younger generations brace for an unfamiliar experience in a region on edge.
