Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 16: In a major breakthrough against criminal elements, Nowabad Police today apprehended two notorious criminals and recovered two illegal firearms - a pistol and a revolver (sixer) - along with four live rounds. The swift action by the police has successfully averted a potentially serious criminal act in Jammu. Acting on specific inputs, a police naka was established near the T-point on the 4th Tawi Bridge. During routine checking, two individuals approaching the naka on a motorcycle attempted to flee. However, the alert police team swiftly overpowered them.
Upon search, the police recovered one pistol, one revolver (sixer), and four live rounds from their possession. The accused were later identified as:
Sumit Verma alias Vansh, son of Rajesh Kumar, resident of Shergarh, District Jammu, aged 20 years. Goshu Kumar alias Sahil alias Gudda, son of Kala Ram, resident of Mehmudpur, District Jammu, aged 20 years. Sumit Verma was found to be a notorious criminal, previously booked under multiple FIRs at Bishnah, Gandhi Nagar, and Bari Brahmana Police Stations. Preliminary investigations reveal that the duo was carrying the illegal firearms to target a rival group member, hinting at a possible gang rivalry.
A case under FIR No. 65/2025 under Section 3/25 of the Arms Act has been registered at Police Station Nowabad. The motorcycle used by the accused - a black Hero Splendor bearing registration number JK02DP-8349 - was also seized from the spot.
The operation was conducted under the leadership of Inspector Deepak Pathania, SHO Nowabad, and assisted by PSI Aziz Tariq, PSI Vikram Singh (Incharge Police Post Canal Road), HC Jaipal Singh, HC Nizam Din, and Constable Neeraj Kumar.
The team operated under the overall supervision of DySP Headquarters Farha Nishat, SP City North Vivek Shekhar, and SSP Jammu Joginder Singh.
The public has widely appreciated the swift and proactive approach of the Jammu Police, noting that a major criminal activity was effectively thwarted thanks to their timely action.
