Kara caught in ‘midst of storm’ yet again | Keeps hands covered while offering condolence to martyr’s family | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 16: Jammu & Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) President Tariq Karra is yet again caught in the “midst of a storm” for keeping his hands covered while offering a condolence to a martyr. According to the details available with Early Times, Kara recently visited the family of the martyr who lost his life during cross-border firing from Pakistan. During the visit Karra allegedly shook hands with the bereaved family members while keeping his hands covered, an action some have interpreted as contradictory to core Congress principles of equality and uniformity among all Indians.“The gesture was inconsistent with the party's long-standing opposition to untouchability—a practice famously opposed by Mahatma Gandhi during India's freedom struggle. The Congress party has historically positioned itself as an organization committed to social equality as enshrined in its constitution,” said a critic. The incident has raised questions about adherence to party ideology among its leadership in Jammu and Kashmir with some party workers expressing concern that such actions could undermine the Congress's message of inclusivity and equality. When contacted, local Congress officials declined to comment specifically on the incident but reiterated the party's unwavering commitment to treating all citizens with equal dignity regardless of background. Pertinently, soon after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which left 26 people, mostly tourists dead, Kara had stirred the “Hornet’s Nest” by suggesting that India should hold talks with Pakistan. Following his statement the Congress had issued clarification stating that the party supports all the actions of the government and only Rahul Gandhi and AICC Chief are authorized to speak on the issue. |
