DMC&H alumnus performs world's first human bladder transplant

NEW DELHI, May 23: DMC&H takes immense pride in announcing a historic medical achievement by one of its distinguished alumni, Dr. Inderbir Gill, who completed his Master of Surgery (MS) from DMC&H. Dr. Gill, in collaboration with Dr. Nima Nassiri and a team of surgeons from Keck Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC) and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), has successfully performed the world's first human bladder transplant.
The groundbreaking procedure was conducted at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and marks a monumental step forward in transplant surgery. The patient, who had been on dialysis for seven years and had lost both kidneys to renal cancer and pre-existing disease, had also lost most of his bladder during a previous tumor removal. The remaining bladder tissue was insufficient and non-functional, making a combined kidney and bladder transplant the only viable option.
Dr. Gill emphasized, this surgery is a historic moment in medicine and is a lifesaving and life-enhancing treatment option for many conditions affecting major organs. Now, the bladder can be added to that list.
Bipin Gupta, Secretary, DMC&H Managing Society, added, it is a matter of immense pride that a DMC&H alumnus has led such a revolutionary advancement in the field of medicine. We congratulate Dr. Inderbir Gill and hope that this milestone inspires many more of our students to strive for global excellence.
Dr. G S Wander, Principal, DMC&H expressed, this is a proud moment for the medical fraternity and especially for DMC&H. Dr. Gill's remarkable achievement exemplifies the global impact of our alumni and reinforces our commitment to excellence in medical education and innovation.
