India slams Pak at UNSC over IWT violations, terrorism | Blood and Water can't flow together | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 24: India delivered a sharp rebuke to Pakistan during a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) session, accusing Islamabad of spreading disinformation about the Indus Water Treaty and undermining its spirit through persistent support for cross-border terrorism. At the Arria Formula Meeting on “Protecting Water in Armed Conflict – Protecting Civilian Lives,” India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, strongly defended New Delhi’s adherence to the 1960 treaty while dismissing Pakistan’s allegations. “India entered into the Indus Water Treaty 65 years ago in good faith, signed in a spirit of goodwill and friendship,” Harish said, emphasizing India’s role as a responsible upper riparian state despite facing significant provocations. Harish accused Pakistan of breaching the treaty’s spirit by sponsoring terrorism and waging wars against India. “Pakistan has violated the spirit of the treaty by inflicting three wars and thousands of terror attacks on India, costing over 20,000 Indian lives in the past four decades,” he stated. He cited the recent attack on tourists in Pahalgam as a “dastardly” example of Pakistan-backed terrorism aimed at destabilizing India. The Indian envoy further criticized Pakistan for obstructing treaty negotiations and spreading false narratives, which he said jeopardize peace, religious harmony, and economic progress in the region. “Pakistan’s state-sponsored cross-border terrorism seeks to hold hostage civilian lives and prosperity,” Harish asserted, noting India’s “extraordinary patience and magnanimity” in response to ongoing hostility. The remarks come amid heightened global focus on water security in conflict zones, with the Indus Water Treaty often hailed as a rare instance of cooperation between the two nations despite decades of tensions. Analysts see India’s firm stance as a signal that New Delhi will counter Pakistan’s narratives on international platforms. |
