CM Dhami Seeks National Urban Drainage Plan, Lift Irrigation in PMKSY at NITI Aayog Meet | | | AGENCIES NEW DELHI, May 24: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Shri Pushkar Singh Dhami participated in the 10th Governing Council Meeting of NITI Aayog held in New Delhi on Saturday, under the chairmanship of Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. During the meeting, CM Dhami raised several key issues and developmental priorities for the state. Highlighting the challenges posed by rapid urbanization in Uttarakhand, CM Dhami called for the formulation of a special national-level plan to develop sustainable drainage systems in urban areas. He noted that increasing urbanization has led to drainage bottlenecks in cities, which need urgent and strategic intervention. He also urged the Centre to include lift irrigation in the guidelines of the "Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana" (PMKSY), emphasizing that only about 10% of the state's hilly areas are currently under irrigation. The CM pointed to state initiatives like connecting glacier-fed and rain-fed rivers under the River Linking Project, along with the construction of check dams and reservoirs, to improve water conservation. CM Dhami further informed the council about two upcoming major events in Uttarakhand - the "Maa Nanda Raj Jat Yatra" in 2026 and the Kumbh Mela in Haridwar in 2027 - and sought central support to ensure these events are organized on a grand and divine scale. Addressing demographic dynamics, the CM emphasized leveraging the demographic dividend to build a developed India, noting that the next ten years are crucial for Uttarakhand in this regard. He said the state government is promoting self-employment to empower the youth and maximize economic potential. Touching on the agriculture sector, CM Dhami pointed out that although the primary sector accounts for only 9.3% of the state's GDP, around 45% of the population is engaged in it. To address this disparity, he said Uttarakhand has launched several initiatives aimed at transitioning from low-value to high-value agriculture, including the Apple, Kiwi, Dragon Fruit, and Millet Missions, as well as the promotion of aromatic plant farming. The meeting reflected the state's commitment to sustainable growth, agriculture diversification, and infrastructure development with strong cooperation from the Centre. |
