Special Day | | | A day before the inauguration of much awaited Kashmir Rail Project, Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed June 6 is a special day for his brothers and sisters in Jammu and Kashmir. He asserted that it would mark a transformative milestone in the history of Jammu and Kashmir. “Tomorrow, 6th June, is indeed a special day for my sisters and brothers of Jammu and Kashmir. Key infrastructure projects worth Rs. 46,000 crores are being inaugurated, which will have a very positive impact on people’s lives”, the Prime Minister stated on his social media handle X. Prime Minister Modi’s reference to the occasion as “special for my sisters and brothers of Jammu and Kashmir” reflects a deeper sentiment—an acknowledgement of the region’s unique identity and the government’s commitment to its progress. The investment in infrastructure is not just economic in nature—it is emotional, cultural, and political. It sends a clear message that Jammu and Kashmir is integral to the national vision of development. PM Modi stated that in addition to being an extraordinary feat of architecture, the Chenab Rail Bridge will improve connectivity between Jammu and Srinagar. “The Anji Bridge stands tall as India’s first cable-stayed rail bridge in a terrain that is challenging. The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project ensures all weather connectivity and the Vande Bharat trains from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra to Srinagar will boost spiritual tourism and create livelihood opportunities.” The completion of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) is especially significant. For decades, the challenging terrain and harsh weather conditions kept Kashmir disconnected from the broader railway network of the country. With this all-weather railway line now a reality, year-round connectivity is no longer a dream. It will drastically reduce travel time, enhance access to healthcare, education, and employment, and most importantly, bring the people of the region closer to the rest of the country—both physically and emotionally. Furthermore, the flagging off of Vande Bharat trains between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Srinagar is a strategic move that will give a major boost to spiritual and adventure tourism. Pilgrims and tourists alike will benefit from faster, safer, and more comfortable travel. Train to Kashmir is expected to generate a host of employment opportunities, particularly for youth and local entrepreneurs involved in hospitality, transport, and service sectors. While these projects have been years in the making, their culmination at this juncture is a clear indicator of the Centre’s sustained focus on the region’s transformation during the past few years. |
