Salal Dam, also known as Salal Hydroelectric Power Station, is a hydropower project on the Chenab River in the Reasi district of the Jammu and Kashmir. It was the first hydropower project built on the Chenab River. It’s a big project that changed Reasi. The work on Salal Dam started in the early 1970’s. It was built by National Hydroelectrical Power Corporation in two parts. Today the dam generates 690 Megwatts of electricity. This electricity is sent to many States like U.P, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Chandigarh and Rajasthan. The height of the dam is approximately 113m (ie 370.7ft), and the approx. length is 487m (ie 1,597.8ft). Whereas, Dam volume is 1,450,000m³ (51,210,000 cuft). Total capacity 228,000 acre ft. Surface area it covers 3.74km² (1.44 saj mi). Annual generation of the electricity is 3082 million kwh. The Salal Dam has helped Reast grow. It has provided jobs to many locals. The transport has improved around Reasi and the roads are getting better. It has improved the power supply scenario in Reasi district. It has led to increase in tourism as many people visit the dam on daily basis. The Salal Dam is more than a symbol of hard work and progress. Tis dam will continue to shine as a source of hope and light for Jammu and Kashmir. |
