Early Times Report
Jammu, June 11: Despite the shadow cast by a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, over 3.31 lakh devotees have registered for the Shri Amarnath Yatra 2025, which is set to commence on July 3 and conclude on August 9, coinciding with Raksha Bandhan. The 38-day pilgrimage, shorter than last year’s 52 days, will proceed along the traditional Pahalgam and Baltal routes, with robust security measures in place to ensure pilgrim safety. The Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board (SASB) reported that registrations, which began on April 14, 2025, have seen an overwhelming response, with estimates suggesting up to 5 lakh devotees may participate. Pilgrims can register online through the SASB’s official website or offline at over 540 authorized bank branches across India. The decision to reduce the yatra’s duration was made prior to the Pahalgam attack, based on auspicious dates, and is unrelated to security concerns. The recent attack in Pahalgam, which targeted mostly tourists, has not deterred the faithful, but it has prompted heightened security preparations. Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat chaired a joint meeting with police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) to review arrangements, emphasizing strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). A total of 581 CAPF companies will be deployed along the yatra routes, with anti-sabotage teams and enhanced risk mitigation strategies to counter potential threats. Prabhat also directed field officers to intensify efforts to dismantle terror networks in the region. “The resolve of the devotees remains unshaken,” said an SASB official. “We are working closely with security forces to ensure a safe and smooth pilgrimage.” The Amarnath Yatra, a revered journey to the holy cave shrine at 3,880 meters in the Himalayas, continues to draw millions, undeterred by challenges, as authorities strive to balance devotion with security. |
