Childhood confused in the trap of child labour
6/17/2025 11:15:38 PM
Vijay Garg

Child labour is such a serious problem that snatches children from their childhood, education and golden future. Not only this, it also disrupts the physical, mental, and sexual development of children. Whereas, we have to build a world where not work, books are children’s right. The solid result of the ongoing continuous struggle in this direction in the world is rarely visible. The international labor organization calls for reinforcing global efforts to abolish all forms of child labour. The voice that rises against child labour forces us to think why crores of children are still constrained to labour in this age of technological development and globalization? According to the international labor organization, even today more than 16 crore children are employed as child workers worldwide and a large part of them are working under dangerous conditions. This situation exposes the darkness behind the dazzling picture of growth, which we ignore. Child labour is an act that snatches children from their childhood very ruthlessly. At times, they have an emphasis on them during work. happens. The result is that their physical, mental, and sexual development is severely disrupted among all these circumstances. All their future prospects seem to be eroded. Indeed, child labour hinders children’s education. In many cases found that children who can make their future bright by reading and writing take the trap of child labour to a dark future the root of this problem is poverty, lack of education, social inequality, unemployment in the family and the lax implementation of child labour laws. When the basic needs of a family’s livelihood are not met, the easiest option in front of them becomes to send the children to work. This is why many innocent children are seen working on farms, factories, brick-kilns, domestic functioning and construction sites. It is heartening that the local administration keeps blinking too often even while watching everything. This crisis is even deeper after the Corona pandemic. Millions of children were deprived of education by the closure of schools. On the other hand, it was considered more appropriate to earn money by sending them to work than studying children in unemployed families. Between the year 2000 and 2020, child labour was reported a decrease of 8.55 crore children globally, which was a positive sign but, the corona pandemic and economic inequalities overturned the trend and followed by a rapid increase in the number of child workers. The problem continues to be extremely severe in rural areas, urban slums and migrant laborers families. This situation emphasizes that there is a need for innovative, holistic, collective and solid commitment to tackle this serious social challenge. Child labour is illegal in India as well as in all countries. It’s time now that we also understand our moral responsibility by not just talking about this topic It’s a challenge for us to root out child labour which should be our major priority to live up to. Obviously, not only the government for this, the local administration and families will also have to come forward. If coordinated efforts, children can be protected from child labour. The undertaking started from the year 1992 by the International Labour Organization worked in empowering national capabilities towards the gradual elimination of child labour and enhancing global awareness. However, the impact of the United Nations’s Sustainable Development Goals remains to be seen. It will be a matter of seeing how successful the commitment will be to end all forms of child labour, especially by the end of the current year. Halan has not yet received the expected success in most campaigns.
The problem of child labour in India is multi-dimensional. Education can be a medium to deal with this problem, which can drive any child out of the cookery of labour. Efforts such as Sarvashiksha Abhiyan and National Child Workers Project are commendable, but making them more comprehensive can play an important role in bringing the end of society, eliminating child labour. The Noble Award-winning Kailash Satyarthi’s organisation ‘Bachpan Bachao Andolan’ has so far liberated thousands of children from child labour. The Uttar Pradesh government has planned to launch a comprehensive campaign from June 12 for child labour elimination. It aims to make child labour free state by the year 2027. It can be considered as the big step of the state government. But, since the year 2011 census, no fresh data of child workers has been upheld so far is hampering the effective implementation of the scheme. To deal with this situation, Panchayati Raj Department has been instructed to identify child workers at village level and collect figures. Additionally the government is preparing a ‘plan book’ by meeting with UNICEF, which will have details of plans that are available to help child workers and their families. Atal residential schools are also being conducted by the government to provide quality complete education to children at the Mandal level, to prevent children from child labour to workers. Against this problem of child labour, the society and the government should call for public awareness, as it is not only an issue of the well-being of children, but a question of the whole humanity. Every child should get safe, healthy and dignified childhood. Today it is required that we adopt fair, sensitive and continuous strategies to build a world where ‘work not books children’s right. Only then can we not only liberate children from child labour, but also strengthen the foundation for the future of the country.
