Upcoming Hydro Projects will transform J&K's energy landscape: Kavinder

Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 20: Senior BJP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Kavinder Gupta today asserted that the upcoming hydro electric power projects being initiated by Jammu and Kashmir Energy Development Agency (JAKEDA) would be a major step towards energy self-sufficiency, economic upliftment, and overall development of the Union Territory. He said the initiative reflects the government's commitment to harnessing the untapped hydro potential of the region in a structured and transparent manner.
Notably, a total of 35 hydro electric power projects with a cumulative generation capacity of 60 MW are being planned by JAKEDA, of which 22 will come up in various parts of the Jammu division-particularly with a major focus on Kishtwar district-while the remaining will be developed in Kashmir province.Speaking at the meeting held at Party Headquarters in Jammu, Kavinder Gupta emphasized that the development of such renewable energy infrastructure will have long-lasting benefits for both the environment and the economy. "Hydro power projects not only offer a clean source of energy but also reduce dependence on fossil fuels, lower electricity costs, and contribute to energy security. In a state like J&K with immense water resources, such projects are the key to a brighter, self-reliant future," he said.
He lauded the decision to implement the projects through the Independent Power Producer (IPP) Mode and Swiss Challenge Method, which encourages private sector participation while ensuring transparency and fair competition. The senior BJP leader noted that these models provide a level playing field for private investors and ensure timely execution with optimal efficiency.
Kavinder Gupta also highlighted the potential of these projects to generate employment opportunities, especially for the youth and skilled manpower in remote areas. He urged the administration to expedite all statutory and non-statutory clearances to ensure smooth implementation of the initiative. Calling the move a reflection of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a Viksit Bharat, Kavinder said the people of Jammu and Kashmir are now witnessing real development driven by strategic planning and inclusive governance.
