Kashmir traders pin hopes on Yatra for tourism revival

Early Times Report

Jammu, July 2: With the annual Amarnath Yatra underway under tight security arrangements, traders across Kashmir are expressing renewed optimism that the smooth and peaceful conduct of this year’s pilgrimage could help revive the tourism-dependent economy of the region, which suffered a massive blow following the heinous terror attack in Pahalgam earlier this year.
The April 22 attack, in which several innocent lives were lost, shook the tranquil tourist town of Pahalgam and cast a long shadow over Kashmir’s tourism sector. Widely condemned across the country, the carnage not only triggered widespread fear but also led to a significant number of cancellations in hotel bookings and tour packages at the start of what is traditionally the Valley’s peak travel season.
However, as the first batches of Amarnath pilgrims begin their spiritual journey toward the holy cave shrine, business owners, hoteliers, transporters, and traders are hopeful that a secure and incident-free Yatra will go a long way in rebuilding trust and confidence among domestic and international tourists.

itality,” said Bashir , a hotelier in Srinagar. “We are hopeful that a peaceful pilgrimage will send a strong and reassuring message across the country — that Kashmir is safe, welcoming, and ready to host visitors.”
For many in the Valley, the pilgrimage is not just a religious event but an economic lifeline. Thousands of locals are directly and indirectly involved in providing services to pilgrims — from transportation and pony rides to food stalls and accommodation.
After the lull caused by the April attack, the Yatra is being seen as an opportunity to heal wounds, restore livelihoods, and counter the fear narrative that has gripped parts of the region.
Government officials, too, are emphasizing the importance of this year’s pilgrimage. Elaborate security and logistical arrangements have been put in place to ensure the safety of every pilgrim, and community leaders are calling on citizens to extend their full support to the Yatra.
As Kashmir attempts to emerge from the shadows of violence and loss, the successful conduct of the Amarnath Yatra is being viewed as a potential turning point — one that could help reclaim the Valley’s image as a place of peace, beauty, and unmatched hospitality.
