Jammu shocked as Rohingyas now turn to street crime
Theft racket busted by Bakshi Nagar Police

Early Times Report

Jammu, July 2: In a shocking twist that raises serious questions about internal security, Rohingya refugees already under scrutiny for past involvement in human trafficking—have now surfaced at the center of a growing theft racket in Jammu. The latest recovery of two stolen scooties and ₹6,000 in cash has thrown light on a disturbing nexus between foreign nationals and local criminal gangs.
The breakthrough came during a swift and targeted operation led by PSI Tanvinder Singh, In-Charge Police Post GMC, under the overall supervision of SHO Bakshi Nagar and SDPO City West. Acting on credible intelligence and technical surveillance, the police apprehended four accused individuals, including two Rohingya nationals.
The Arrests: Foreigners and Locals Caught Red-Handed
Those arrested include, Mohammad Ayas, son of Salam Abdul, and
Saiful Islam, son of Badi Alam — both residents of Myanmar, currently residing in Karyani Tallab, Narwal, Jammu.
These two were caught with the stolen two-wheelers, bearing registration numbers JK02CJ6963 and JK02BD2043.
Accompanying them were two local accomplices, Charan Singh, son of Krishan Lal, a resident of Senabathi, Ramban (currently in Gujjar Nagar), and Dimple Sharma, son of Sunil Dutt, originally from Pathankot, currently residing near Bawe Mandir, Jammu.
Police also recovered ₹6,000 in cash from the duo, suspected to be proceeds from stolen property.
Dark Underbelly: From Human Trafficking to Street Crime
This is not the first time Rohingyas—classified as illegal immigrants—have come under the scanner in Jammu. Authorities have previously linked some among them to human trafficking networks exploiting women from their own community. Now, with their involvement in vehicle thefts and possible links to local gangs, security experts warn that Rohingya-related criminal activity is escalating and diversifying.
The Jammu police have hailed this as a significant step in dismantling such emerging syndicates. “We remain committed to the safety and security of our citizens. Such elements will not be allowed to disturb public order,” said a senior official involved in the operation.
The Bakshi Nagar Police have assured the public of ongoing efforts to crack down on cross-border criminal elements and maintain tight surveillance on refugee settlements in and around the city.
