UDHAMPUR, July 12: Director Sericulture J&K, Ajaz Ahmad Bhat visited the Cocoon Auction Market, Udhampur, where hundreds of silkworm rearers and buyers participated.
He inspected arrangements and reiterated the aim to ensure smooth, transparent auctions. He noted that over 60,000 kg of cocoons had been procured, with ?2.5 crore worth of transactions and ?1600/kg as the highest price. About 1600 silkworm rearers have sold produce since July 1.
In view of the large turnout, the market will continue for one more week. He stated that efforts are being made to strengthen market linkages and provide doorstep support to farmers. Currently, over 70% of cocoon produce is sold outside J&K.
Cocoon auction markets across Jammu aim to connect sellers with buyers from within and outside the UT for better returns.
The Director was accompanied by District Sericulture Officer and department officials. The visit highlighted the department's commitment to supporting silkworm rearers and sustainable sericulture practices. |
