Illegal Khair wood smuggling busted in Twin Operations 7/25/2025 6:41:19 PM early times report Jammu, July 25: In a significant crackdown on illegal timber smuggling, police teams from Gharota and Chowki Choura, in coordination with the Forest Department, seized two vehicles transporting illegally felled Khair wood during late-night naka checking operations on the intervening night of July 23 and 24. In the first incident, a joint naka and night patrolling team of Gharota Police and forest officials intercepted a black Safari vehicle (Reg. No. MH02CB-0457) near Thathi Bridge. The driver, upon spotting the police, attempted to flee and managed to escape under the cover of darkness. Upon inspection, the vehicle was found carrying 11 Khair wood logs, weighing approximately 5 to 6 quintals, meant for unauthorized commercial sale. The vehicle was seized, and a report has been registered at Police Station Gharota. Notably, the said vehicle had been under suspicion due to repeated complaints from locals and the Forest Department regarding its involvement in smuggling activities. In a separate incident on the same night, the naka team at Chowki Choura signaled a Tata Mobile vehicle (Reg. No. JK02DG-6322) approaching from the Bhamla side to stop. The driver attempted to evade the naka and abandoned the vehicle before fleeing into the nearby forest. Upon inspection, the vehicle was found loaded with Khair wood logs weighing nearly 20 quintals, suspected to be intended for illegal trade. The vehicle and forest produce were seized, and necessary legal proceedings have been initiated at Police Post Chowki Choura. Both vehicles and the seized timber will be handed over to the Forest Department after completing the formalities under the Forest Act. The swift action by the police and forest officials reflects their ongoing commitment to protecting forest resources and cracking down on illegal trade.
