SMVDIME, SMVDNSH conduct free cataract surgeries for Jammu | | | early times report
Katra, July 25: In a powerful demonstration of compassionate, inclusive healthcare, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME), in collaboration with its associated hospital Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital (SMVDNSH), performed five free cataract surgeries under the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) for patients from Village Halqa in the Marh block of Jammu. The patients were identified during a free multi-specialty health camp held on July 19, organised in partnership with Mission Shakti – District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW Jammu), the Social Welfare Department, and the Jammu & Kashmir Rural Livelihood Mission (JKRLM). Surgeries were performed on July 24 by a skilled ophthalmic team led by Dr. Malvika Sharma, Assistant Professor at SMVDIME & SMVDNSH, with discharges on July 25. What made this initiative truly holistic was the hospital’s commitment to dignified, end-to-end care. From free transportation, nutritious meals, and stay for both patients and attendants, to post-operative medicines and spectacles—every aspect of patient care was provided at zero cost. These surgeries are a reflection of our mission to make advanced medical care accessible regardless of income or geography,” said Dr. Yashpal, Executive Director, SMVDIME. “This is not just about restoring vision—it’s about restoring dignity, mobility, and hope,” added Dr. M.M. Mathavan, Facility Director, SMVDNSH. “Together with government bodies, we’re building a safety net for those who need it most.” This impactful effort was carried out under the guidance of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, whose unwavering support for healthcare advancement in the region remains pivotal. The Shrine Board-backed public-private partnership model—uniting institutions like SMVDIME and SMVDNSH with government agencies and national health schemes—continues to set new benchmarks for rural healthcare delivery in Jammu & Kashmir. The success of this initiative highlights how synergised action between mission-driven institutions and government programs can bring real, lasting change to underserved populations—bringing not just sight, but a renewed sense of inclusion and care.
