3-Day Indian Sign language workshop concludes

JAMMU, July 25: In a significant step towards fostering inclusivity and empowering communication, Army Public School Jammu Cantt successfully conducted a three-day Indian Sign Language (ISL) workshop in collaboration with the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC).
A Department that is dedicated to the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Divyangjan.
The emininent personalities,who shared their expertise were Ms Sakshi Sharma, an experienced ISL interpreter associated with ISLRTC, New Delhi ,Ms Vishali Raina, a passionate ISL teacher from Jammu, who engages learners through interactive methods and Ms Tulsi Sakhuja, a determined educator from New Delhi.
The workshop commenced with the auspicious lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the Principal,Dr Puneet Kaur; the Vice Principal Ms Manmeet Kour; the Head Mistress Ms Anupama Bahadur and the dignitaries.
Ms Radhika Bhushan CCA Junior wing welcomed the dignitaries and participants. It was followed by the address of the Principal ,Dr Puneet Kaur , where she affirmed the need as educators to recognise that disability is not a limitation but a different way of experiencing the world. Her words invigorated the ambience for workshop.
During the workshop, participants were introduced to essential ISL vocabulary, greetings, colours, shapes, numbers, alphabets, fruits, vegetables, and verbs to facilitate everyday communication with the deaf community. Sessions also covered time, festivals, holidays, professions, food items, and subject-wise vocabulary for higher secondary subjects, equipping educators with practical ISL skills for inclusive classrooms.
The participants were enlightened with discussions on the concept of hearing and hearing loss, deaf culture, sign language myths, and sign language as a mode of education for the deaf. Engaging game practices and revision sessions, MCQs, and feedback sessions ensured comprehensive learning and retention.
The interactive sessions, led by trained resource persons, fostered an environment of active participation, hands-on practice, and reflection on inclusive education practices. The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks by the Vice Principal, Ms Manmeet Kour applauding the rentless efforts of the resource persons.The participants expressed gratitude for the enriching experience.
