New Delhi Railway Station undertakes major cleanliness overhaul to enhance passenger experience
7/26/2025 6:55:20 PM

early times report

New Delhi, July 26: In a significant step towards elevating passenger comfort and maintaining exemplary hygiene standards, New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) has launched an intensive and sustained cleanliness drive. This initiative underscores Indian Railways’ strong commitment to the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan and its mission to provide a safe, clean, and passenger-friendly environment at one of the busiest railway stations in the country.
The extensive cleaning operation includes the deployment of state-of-the-art mechanized cleaning machines such as high-pressure water jets, automatic floor scrubbers, ride-on sweepers, vacuum cleaners, and specialized escalator cleaning machines. These modern tools are being used to deep-clean platforms, tracks, circulating areas, escalators and other high-footfall locations.
A comprehensive sanitation effort has been carried out across all key areas of the station—platforms, concourses, waiting halls, foot over bridges, toilets, tracks, and drains. To ensure continuity and thorough coverage, dedicated cleaning teams are operating in 24x7 rotational shifts, supported by a round-the-clock monitoring system that ensures real-time feedback and corrective action.
To encourage public participation, regular announcements are being made across the station premises, urging passengers to cooperate and maintain cleanliness. To curb littering and discourage public nuisance, spot fines are being imposed on violators as per Indian Railways' regulations, specifically under the Indian Railways (Penalties for Activities Affecting Cleanliness at Stations) Rules.
In support of passenger convenience and proper waste disposal, a sufficient number of dustbins have been strategically placed throughout the station premises. These are regularly emptied and sanitized as part of the maintenance schedule. The station administration is also working closely to resolve any structural or utility-related issues that could hinder cleanliness—such as faulty drainage systems or inadequate lighting in certain areas. The cleanliness is being monitored at officer level.
This integrated cleanliness initiative reflects Indian Railways' holistic approach to station management, combining modern technology, manpower, enforcement, and public awareness. It sets a benchmark for hygiene at major transit hubs and aims to create a pleasant and dignified travel experience for millions of daily passengers.
