Omar Govt mulls special Assembly session on statehood restoration | | | Sandeep bhat Early Times Report
Jammu, July 26: The Omar Abdullah-led government in Jammu and Kashmir is actively considering convening a special session of the Legislative Assembly to deliberate on the critical issue of restoring statehood to the Union Territory. Within days of assuming office, the newly formed popular government has taken a significant political step, with the state cabinet already passing a resolution demanding the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s full statehood. The move signals the administration's intent to push for constitutional and political rights that were revoked in August 2019 when the erstwhile state was bifurcated and downgraded into two Union Territories. Sources close to the Chief Minister confirmed that consultations are underway to call a special session of the Assembly, where the resolution is expected to be discussed in detail and formally adopted with wider participation from elected representatives. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has repeatedly asserted that the restoration of statehood is a non-negotiable demand and a top priority for his government. "We are committed to representing the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The resolution passed by the cabinet is only the beginning of a larger political and constitutional movement," a senior minister in the government stated. Political analysts see this as a bold and timely move by the new dispensation, aimed at building consensus across party lines and creating moral pressure on the Centre to act on its earlier commitment to restore statehood at an "appropriate time." If convened, the special session will mark the first formal legislative debate on the statehood issue since the abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019. |
